The Government has approved an eastern coast railway project forming part of the Howrah–Chennai High Density Network. The corridor spans from Kolkata through Odisha covering Balasore, Bhadrak, Jakhapura, Haridaspur, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Khurda and Berhampur, and extends into Andhra Pradesh through Naupada, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam up to Vijayawada and Chennai. This stretch is being developed as a four lined corridor to ease congestion and improve connectivity. The project will benefit major ports such as Kakinada, Machilipatnam and Gangavaram, strengthening cargo movement and logistics.

The project includes 3 mega bridges, 58 major bridges, 416 minor bridges, 73 underpasses and 3 flyovers, along with a 2.7 km elevated railway line, with a total track length of about 458 km. Designed for high density, high capacity and high speed operations, it will address heavy traffic across the corridor. The project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 51.5 crore kilograms annually, supporting a shift from road to rail and improving environmental sustainability.
